Drama, Improv & Philosophy

Build confidence, presence and self-expression through acting, improvisation and philosophical dialogue. Classes for adults and beginners.

Something Different

What Makes This Different?

Most drama schools teach technique. Most philosophy courses teach theory. This space brings them together — experiential, embodied, social, reflective, creative.

Not a Traditional Acting School

No auditions, no prerequisites. This is about you — your voice, your presence, your story.

Not Academic Philosophy

Philosophy here is lived, not lectured. You explore ideas through movement, dialogue and improvisation.

Not Corporate Coaching

This isn't PowerPoint confidence. It's real, embodied, human expression — built through creative practice.

Philosophy Through Performance

The unique heart of this studio. Explore philosophy through drama, improvisation and process-based performance. Step into characters, situations and stories that explore identity, meaning, memory and human experience — not just through discussion, but through embodied practice. Inspired by traditions ranging from process drama and Athol Fugard to existential thinkers like Camus and Nietzsche, this is a space where performance becomes a way of exploring what it means to be human.

About

Gar Bell

I work at the intersection of acting, improvisation, process drama and philosophy — a practice built around presence, imagination, emotional truth and the kind of confidence that comes from being genuinely alive in a room with other people.

I completed the Advanced Performance year-long course at the Gaiety School of Acting, trained with Mary Murray at Visions Drama School, and completed all levels of improvisation training with Neil Curran at Lower The Tone Improvisation School, as well as training in improv with Kelly Shatter. I hold a certified Drama Facilitation qualification through the National Association of Youth Drama, and have acted in commercials and short films.

My academic background is in English Literature and Philosophy at undergraduate level, and I hold an MA in Philosophy from Maynooth University, where I studied Kant and Schopenhauer — thinkers concerned with perception, will, suffering, identity and the nature of experience itself.

That combination — performance training, facilitation, improvisation and philosophical depth — shapes everything I do. The work isn't about teaching people to "act." It's about creating spaces where spontaneity, storytelling, embodiment and human connection become ways of exploring who we are and what things mean.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A drama workshop is a structured creative session where participants explore acting techniques, improvisation, and storytelling through guided exercises. Unlike a traditional class, workshops are experiential — you learn by doing, not by watching. At Gar Bell Studio, our workshops blend performance with philosophical inquiry for a uniquely transformative experience.

Absolutely not. Our acting classes in Dublin are designed for complete beginners as well as those with experience. The improv classes especially require zero background — just a willingness to show up and be present. Many of our most engaged participants had never set foot on a stage before.

Improv builds confidence, spontaneity, active listening, and social ease. It trains you to think on your feet, communicate clearly, and be comfortable with uncertainty. Many people find it transforms not just their creative abilities but their everyday interactions — at work, in relationships, and in life.

Process drama is a form of drama where participants explore themes, ideas, and stories from the inside — taking on roles and making decisions within a dramatic world. It's not about performing for an audience; it's about using drama as a tool for understanding. We use it to explore philosophical questions about identity, meaning, and human nature.

Philosophy asks the big questions: Who am I? What does it mean to be human? How should I live? Performance gives us a space to embody those questions rather than just think about them. Through roleplay, improvisation, and dramatic exploration, abstract ideas become lived experiences. It's Socratic dialogue meets theatre.

Classes are held at various studio spaces across Dublin city centre. When you book a session, you'll receive the specific venue details. All locations are easily accessible by public transport.
